Five Thankful Ways to Quit

Ways to Quit

To our community members,

Ready to quit? As we welcome the upcoming Thanksgiving, we want to invite you to become more aware, open your heart, practice gratitude, and work that habit with us using the next five steps. We have prepared simple suggestions which will help you along the way.

  1. Set a quit date. Use a remarkable event like the upcoming thanksgiving to quit. You can also choose other meaningful dates like a special event, birthday, or anniversary. Share your quit date with a friend, loved one, or an accountability partner.
  2. Change your environment. Replace any reminders of your addiction with the benefits of quitting. For example, stay apart from people who would encourage you to be involved with the object of your addiction (drug, alcohol, or behavior). Navigate towards those who support and encourage your decision to quit.
  3. Displace your triggers. The truth is that quitting a habit is almost impossible, what is possible is replacing an unwanted habit with a preferred habit. In the Prevention habit loop, When you get an urge to perform this undesired habit, allow yourself a moment of transition to think about the routine and its benefit. This will greatly influence your routine and put you in control of your reward or outcome. Instead of giving in to an urge to use, the transition moment allows you to think about the moment before you experience it. You can come up with alternative activities, such as going for a walk.
  4. Be grateful for the challenge. Being a victim to the problems or challenges in our life doesn’t bring solutions. Thought of gratitude could cause us to become aware of a solution from a greater level of consciousness, that is bigger than the habit. Think about what worked and what did not in your past attempts and give yourself some credit. Consider what might have contributed to relapse and make changes accordingly.
  5. Build your support network. Your family and friends must understand that you are serious about quitting. Be upfront with your healthcare provider, about the method of quitting that you prefer. There may be preventive medications that can ease the process for you and increase your chances of success. Find a support group or start one.
